Details

Stainer influenced violins from this period were made all over Europe with German and English instruments often being practically indistinguishable from each other. This violin could easily be English, but we are playing safe with the attribution to Germany. The later head is definitely German.

The one piece back is figured with faint flame ascending from the left; the sides and head also of faint flamed maple; the top also of one piece and the purfling painted on; the varnish of a warm brown colour worn in a genuine patina of age.

The violin offers excellent playability, having a bright clear sound with even balance across the strings. It is very responsive at high positions, beautifully melodic in the higher registers, warm and resonant in the bass and is very responsive for dynamics inflections, nuances and contrasts.
