German Trade Violin, Saxon School, labelled Arturo Barini – Mirecourt – France

Despite the French label and, indeed, the overall style and outline which could easily be taken for the Vosges school, we’re convinced this is a carefully crafted Saxon violin.

The faint, broad ‘flame’ of the back plate contrasts with the narrow flame of the ribs and plain maple head; closely spaced reed lines at the centre of the top grow wider towards the flanks and all is covered by a distinctive shaded varnish which is marked by a faux antique patina.

It has a resonant, colourful lower register with sweet singing tone in the upper registers, speaks easily at high positions on all strings and is well balanced across the strings and throughout the range. With great sound articulation and projection, it is responsive to dynamics contrasts and perfect for double stoppings.

The bow feels very steady on all the strings and the violin is comfortable, which makes it easy and fun to play.
