Jan Lindeman was born in Amsterdam in 1890. He approached violin making from a cabinet making background and he soon found himself in much demand for his careful repair work. His abilities in expertise and restoration meant that his new instrument output was fairly small and this beautiful cello from 1945 may possibly be the last instrument he made.
Strong red varnish over a golden ground, superb wood, broad purfling and a deeply undercut scroll are typical characteristics of his work.
